Back to big-time European competition; how would Sale fare this time? Previous excursions at this level had not been covered in glory, but with the new regime come new expectations. For me, I am trying to temper the feeling that something good is about to happen in the team with the cold water of reality; the reality that this is effectively a new team who will take a while to fully bed in.

Sale’s season after three games could probably be most charitably described as ‘inconsistent’. Relinquishing a 10-0 halftime lead at home in the opener, a comprehensive win at Irish and a scrappy defeat at Bristol.

The loud ‘thump’ heard at the AJ Bell at around ten to five on Saturday afternoon was a combination of Rob Du Preez’s kick hitting the post and Sale Sharks coming back to earth.

It was the return of squeaky bum time as, in an echo from times past, Sale eked out a slender lead with a few minutes to go, then spent the remaining time frantically protecting that lead from an opposition onslaught.
