View from the Birtles: Sale Sharks 26 Saracens 41 [AP15]

It may not seem it from the scoreline, but this was one of the best performances I’ve seen from the Sharks women.

Two tries for Sale in the opening ten minutes had Saracens (and most of the crowd) wondering what just happened.

Saracens being Saracens, though, soon regained overall dominance and scored three tries of their own to take a 21-14 lead. Sale pulled it back to even stevens and it was looking as if that was how we’d go into the break, but Sarries got their fourth with the last play of the half.

Their fifth try took them to a fourteen point lead, which Sale pulled back to eight with their unconverted bonus-point try. Two Saracens penalties completed the scoring.

But, as I said, this was an encouraging performance from Sale. The scrum held its own, at least until the front row was changed, the passing was crisp and there was some good, decisive running on display.

There was certainly enough there to hint at better things in store next season. It’s starting to come together.
